Academic Curriculum Overview

“Building Knowledge, Skills and Confidence for Life”

The AYA Academic Curriculum provides a broad, balanced, relevant and ambitious programme of learning that enables pupils to build secure knowledge and skills, make sustained progress and work towards recognised qualifications and successful adult lives.

At Key Stage 4, pathways become increasingly personalised and ambitious, with a clear focus on accredited learning, recognised qualifications, post-16 progression and preparation for adulthood.

Learning is sequenced progressively, so that prior knowledge and successful experiences provide the foundation for deeper understanding and increasing independence. At Key Stage 3, the focus is on strengthening academic foundations, re-engaging pupils with learning and developing the confidence and independence needed for future study.

At Key Stage 4, pathways become increasingly personalised and ambitious, with a clear focus on accredited learning, recognised qualifications, post-16 progression and preparation for adulthood.

At AYA, curriculum extends beyond formal lessons. We recognise that how pupils learn is as important as what they learn, and opportunities to develop communication, confidence, independence and social understanding are embedded throughout the school day and through experiences beyond the classroom.

At the heart of our curriculum is The AYA Model, which brings together three connected strands:

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

In accordance with the SEND Regulations (2014) and the Equality Act (2010), our curriculum ensures equitable access and opportunity. Prioritising reading, writing, speaking, and numeracy, we provide focused assistance ranging from advanced language development to phonics instruction. In order to ensure that every student may achieve, teachers get to know their pupils and modify the curriculum to suit their unique needs.
