Individual Progress & Tracking
At AYA College, assessment is used to understand what our students know, remember and can apply. Our approach recognises that progress is not always linear, and assessment helps us identify achievements, remove barriers to learning, and ensure every student is making meaningful progress towards their academic, personal and employment goals.
Subject-Specific Assessment
Assessment is tailored to the needs of each subject and learner. Teachers use a range of methods, including practical activities, project work, discussions, presentations, vocational tasks, written assignments and tests, to evaluate learning. In-Class Assessment and Feedback
At AYA College, feedback is an essential part of learning. We believe students make the greatest progress when feedback is timely, supportive and focused on helping them succeed. Assessment and feedback are designed to build confidence, resilience and independence.
Teachers provide live feedback throughout lessons, identifying misconceptions and offering support as learning takes place.
Teachers regularly review learning across the class to identify common strengths and areas for development.
Students receive regular opportunities to review their work, reflect on feedback and improve outcomes.
Summative Assessments
(Examinations and Formal Assessment)
- Key Stage 3
- Key Stage 4
Students complete two formal assessment windows each academic year alongside regular low-stakes assessments throughout the year.
Assessments are designed to evaluate what students have learned, retained and can apply. These may include written examinations, coursework, practical assessments and vocational assignments. Assessment information is shared with parents and carers to provide a clear picture of progress, achievement and areas for further development. The college uses low-stakes, high-frequency assessment opportunities to reduce anxiety, support confidence and enable students to demonstrate success in a supportive environment.
Students undertake two or three formal assessment windows each academic year, alongside ongoing assessments linked to their academic, vocational and employability pathways. Assessments are designed to prepare students for external qualifications, further education, employment and independent living. Students are assessed only on content they have been taught and are supported to develop effective revision, organisation and self-management skills.
Mock examinations and vocational assessments provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and readiness for final qualifications.
Following formal assessment periods, progress information is shared with students, parents and carers based on:
- Performance in assessments
- Attendance and engagement
- Behaviour for learning
- Effort and participation
- Completion of classwork, coursework and independent study
- Progress towards individual learning and personal development targets
This information provides a realistic indication of achievement while identifying the support required to help every student fulfil their potential.
